Southside Virgina is essentually the area South of the James River, West of the fall line, and East of the Blueridge Mountains

 

Counties considered part of the region are Amelia, Appomattox, Bedford, Brunswick, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, counties.

 

The independent cities of Danville, Emporia, Lynchburg, and Martinsville, are also considered to be in the western part of this region.

 

 

 

Amelia County, Virginia

Amelia County is a United States county located just west of Richmond in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The county is included in the Greater Richmond Region, and its county seat is Amelia Courthouse.[1]

Amelia County was created in 1735 from parts of Prince George and Brunswick counties, and it was named in honor of Princess Amelia of Great Britain. Parts of the county were later carved out to create Prince Edward and Nottowaycounties.

 

 

 

 

Appomattox County Virginia

Bedford County, Virginia

 

Bedford County was created in 1753 from parts of Lunenburg County, and several changes in alignment were made until the present borders were established in 1786. The county was named in honor of John Russell, an English statesman and fourth Duke of Bedford.

 

 

 

 

Brunswick County Virginia

 

The first recorded foray by the colonists into what is now Brunswick County occurred in 1650. Explorers left Fort Henry (Petersburg) to follow the Occoneeche trail on an expedition for trading with the Indians to the south. By 1714 the area was known well enough that it was selected by Governor Alexander Spotswood as the site of Fort Christanna, a trading depot and school for Indian children.

 

 

 

Buckingham County, Virginia

 

Buckingham County, lying south of the James River at the geographic center of the state, was established in 1761 from the southeastern portion of Albemarle County. The origin of the county name comes from the Duke of Buckingham (Buckinghamshire, England). This is the only Buckingham County in the United States.

Lee’s army marched through the county during Lee’s retreat on their way to Appomattox, Virginia.

 

 

 

 

Campbell County Virginia

 

Campbell County, settled in 1736 and incorporated in 1781, is located in Virginia’s south central Piedmont region in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area is rich in both natural beauty and history. Campbell County was named for General William Campbell, the Revolutionary War hero famous for his leadership in defeating the Tories and Loyalists at the Battle of King’s Mountain in the Carolinas.

 

 

Charlotte County, Virginia

 

Charlotte County was formed from neighboring Lunenburg County in 1764 and named for Queen Charlotte, wife of George III of England. Settlement of this new frontier began approximately 50 years before the county was formed.
